![]() ![]() ![]() Double Star, I think, does the job pretty well. My (self-imposed) mission was to find a Robert Heinlein story where the enjoyment of the tale isn't swamped by the offensive content for which Heinlein is, unfortunately, well known. But somehow one appearance as a double leads to another, and another. Larry's first task: fool the Martians during a vitally important Martian adoption ceremony. He promptly finds himself whisked off to the planet Mars, standing in for one of the most important political figures in the solar system, who has been kidnapped. In Double Star, a 1956 Robert Heinlein novella, Lawrence Smith (aka Lorenzo Smythe or "Lorenzo the Great"), an out-of-work actor, accepts a job to impersonate a man for a few days, without, perhaps, asking as many questions about the job as he should have. ![]() Review also posted at Fantasy Literature. ![]()

But making a smart gun that’s good enough to be taken seriously has proved beyond difficult. The weapons carry the hope that an extra technological safeguard might prevent a wide range of gun-related accidents and deaths. Smart guns have been a notoriously quixotic category for decades. The weapons being tested at this site are smart guns: They can identify their registered users and won’t fire for anyone else. It’s a far cry from the gleaming labs of the average James Bond movie, but Q might still be proud. Black acoustic-foam padding on the walls softens the gunshot noise to make the experience more bearable for the shooter, while an air filtration system sucks particulates out of the air. Paper targets with torsos printed on them hang from two parallel tracks, and a rubber trap waits at the back of the container to catch the spent bullets.
